5S – Process Best Practice
5S is a process made popular and used by Toyota which is based on five principles: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. This practice is a foundation for both Kaizen and the Toyota Production Systems and is meant to improve workplace efficiency and eliminate waste. Each of these disciplines can be translated into the following:
- Seiri: Sort
- Seiton: Straighten
- Seiso: Shine
- Seiketsu: Standardize
- Shitsuke: Sustain
Once the first 4 S’s have been established, they become the new way to operate the business. By maintaining focus on this new way and not allowing a gradual decline back to the old ways, business can receive the effect of continuous improvement, or Kaizen.
